The M20 and M21 were both release in 1963, but it wasn't until 1965 that the M22 hit the market. The M22 was created for the Corvette Grand Sport racing program.

The first time I heard the term "rock crusher" was in reference to the transmission in the 1967 L88 Corvette. Due to the low gear angle there is a fair amount of gear noise, really like a medium / heavy duty truck transmission. True enough the M22 did trickle out the door in 1965-67 and was buried in the option lists.

This bumbed me out since I had previously read that this was an indication that it was a Saginaw not a Muncie. It does have a 7 bolt side cover. Doe this mean it's still an M22 but just manufactured at the Saginaw assembly plant or it's not an M22 "Rock Crusher Transmission". I am just learning !
